August’s Reason Why The Anthony Thornton Team Donates to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta & Local Charities

A STORY OF – Nico

Nico’s journey with cleft lip and palate began before he was even born. Veronica and her husband, Alejandro, were informed at her 16-week ultrasound that their son would be born with a congenital defect on his face and lip. Though they would have to wait for the delivery to know the extent of the condition, the family already had a team in place at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta planning for his treatment.

Cleft lip and palate is a complicated condition, and more than just a cosmetic issue—it can cause life-threatening difficulties with feeding and nursing in the first months of life. It also affects the entire ear, nose and throat system, causing potential problems with draining and infections.

Nico’s care team at Children’s worked closely with his parents and informed them of everything to expect upon his arrival, which included a complex series of specialized treatments and procedures.

As soon as Nico was born, he was outfitted with a special bottle so he could safely and healthily get nourishment. At just 2 months, he underwent his first of several surgeries at the Craniofacial Clinic to begin repairing his lip and palate. Afterward, he had an appliance implanted into his palate that would help close it up.

Nico is now 2 years old, and though his medical journey has been arduous, Children’s has been with his family every step of the way. Apart from treating the physical aspect of the cleft lip and palate, Nico has also had extensive treatment with dentists, ear nose and throat specialists as well as speech-language pathologists to help with his adjustment. Despite all he’s been through, he is a very sweet toddler, and these days always has a huge smile on his face—something his family is incredibly grateful for every single day.

A STORY OF MEI – Meet Mei

In his three short years, Mei Deavers has adapted to more than most adults have.

Born with limb deficiency in both arms and legs, Mei spent the first two years of his life in a
special-needs orphanage in China. That was where Tracey Deavers first met Mei while on a
trip with a group of college students in 2010.

Though Tracey and his wife Shannon already had four kids of their own, they were
considering adopting a child from China before the trip. Once he met Mei, Tracey knew the
young boy should become part of the family.

In November 2010, Tracey and Shannon brought Mei back to their home in Cochran, Ga. The
couple sought medical advice from several hospitals on how they could continue to make life
easier for their newest son.

Mei’s right leg required the most attention. The Deavers were encouraged that Dr. Schmitz
believed he could salvage the right knee, opting to amputate just above the ankle. Other
hospitals believed it was necessary to amputate above the knee, a step the Deavers wanted to
avoid if possible.

Both of Mei’s feet were amputated. A few months later, he was fitted for temporary prostheses
and received his new prosthetics. “The doctors said it would take Mei four to six weeks to be
up and walking on his new legs,” Shannon said. “But it only took him a couple of days before
he could walk across our living room.”

The everyday things 3-year-olds like to do—playing with toys and having fun with his
siblings—are well within Mei’s grasp. He takes obstacles in stride, inspiring his family and
others.

A STORY OF MATTHEW Meet Matthew

One in 100 babies are born with a congenital heart defect. Our sweet Matthew is one of those.

At formation, his heart sort of “twisted up.” He heart has a large hole, his two main arteries are switched and come off of the same ventricle, his pulmonary artery is narrowed, and his valves criss-cross into the wrong chambers (that’s his biggest problem).

He’s one in eight million. He’s our lightning strike.

Because of the complexity of his heart, he was not able to have a corrective procedure as some kids are. At 7 months and 3 years of age, he underwent open heart surgeries at Egleston to perform a bypass. So, his blood flow does not go through the heart, like mine and yours does, it goes straight to the lungs to try to reduce the workload of his heart.

Despite the complexity of his heart, and two open heart surgeries, God has blessed us with a wonderful, healthy, happy boy. He is active in church, sports and the gifted program at school. He has tons of friends, he loves life and especially people, and he wants to change the world in some way.

We are forever grateful to Dr. V and staff at Pediatric Cardiology Services, and Dr. Kanter and staff at Children’s at Egleston and Sibley Heart Center for the compassionate, loving care provided to Matthew and to our family during our time there.

We got our smile back from our sweet boy, and he hasn’t stopped smiling since.

Thank you all at Children’s for the love you give to families during their darkest moments.

May’s Reason Why The Anthony Thornton Team Donates to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta & Local Charities

A STORY OF LONDON – London’s story: An Infant’s Frightening Fight with Meningitis

When she was just five months old, London suffered from a double ear infection. Knowing she’d had a rough night, London’s mom Alexis got up to check on her at 4 a.m. She found the baby in her crib with her eyes fixed upward and breathing very slowly. The family rushed to their local emergency room. Doctors stabilized London and started her on a ventilator, but quickly realized the problem was more severe than the hospital was equipped to handle. London was soon life-flighted to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Following a spinal tap, Children’s doctors diagnosed London with bacterial meningitis, an infection in the spinal fluid, which can cause brain damage and hearing loss and can be fatal. London was immediately put on several antibiotics and her parents wondered if their baby girl would survive. After a stressful couple of days, London began responding to the antibiotics and was soon able to come off the ventilator. It would be many more days before doctors could determine if there would be lasting effects from the meningitis. This was made more difficult by the fact that London was so young and hadn’t fully developed her motor skills.

However, London’s parents and medical team were all delighted to see her smiling and
beginning to bounce back so soon after such a scary situation. She responded well to nurses and kept smiling, reassuring her parents that their little girl would be okay. London did lose hearing in one ear, requiring her to undergo speech and hearing therapy at least until she begins kindergarten. Now, at three years old, London is thriving. This Miracle Child’s parents say London is bright, engaged at preschool, playful and overall a happy toddler.
