December’s Reason Why The Anthony Thornton Team Donates to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta & Local Charities

Patients at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta talk to Santa on iPhone! Meanwhile, here’s Another Story about a boy, Wyatt.

After years of trying to get pregnant, longtime Children’s nurse Jenn Keeton and her husband, Kevin, decided to pursue fertility treatment with the help of the Children’s benefits program, and on their third round of in vitro fertilization (IVF), the Keetons got pregnant with their son, Wyatt.

They were thrilled to finally be pregnant, but during Jenn’s 20-week ultrasound, doctors noticed that Wyatt’s bone development was behind. A genetic test determined that the Keetons’ son had one of two forms of dwarfism.

Wyatt was born at 37 weeks without complications and was diagnosed with Spondyloepiphyseal Dysplasia (SED), a very rare, but thankfully not lethal, form of dwarfism. He went on to spend a week in the NICU because he was born with very low muscle tone and would fail his car seat test twice. As soon as they arrived home, they enrolled Wyatt in physical therapy.

At 11 weeks old, doctors diagnosed Wyatt with spinal cord stenosis. Common in children with dwarfism, the disorder is caused by the fact that the heads of children with dwarfism are disproportionate to their smaller frames, resulting in pressure on the spinal cord. William Wrubel, M.D., a Children’s neurosurgeon, told the Keetons they could hold off on surgery, perhaps not needing it at all, if they put Wyatt in a cervical collar, which would reduce the pressure on his spine. “We went to several clinics to find a brace for Wyatt, but no collar was small enough.”

Determined to help Wyatt avoid surgery, the Keetons decided to make Wyatt’s collars themselves by cutting a tiny strip off of a full-size adult brace. “Wyatt’s spinal stenosis is almost completely resolved, so he won’t have to undergo surgery,” Jenn says.

Wyatt’s doctors and the Keetons will work together for years to come. Developmentally, Wyatt is behind for a 1 year old. He is unable to crawl or stand, and he sees an ophthalmologist every few months, as children with dwarfism are often nearsighted and at risk for retinal detachment. Doctors will also monitor Wyatt’s hearing; while his hearing is normal now, he’s at risk for hearing loss.

November’s Reason Why The Anthony Thornton Team Donates to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta & Local Charities

That’s Parker in the video, and here’s Another Story – Meet T.J.

Born prematurely at 24 weeks, T.J. weighed 1 pound, 12 ounces. A few days after his birth, he began to decline and was diagnosed with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), a common condition in premature babies that can result in the death of intestinal tissue.

T.J. was quickly transferred to Children’s, though doctors did not expect him to live due to his size. Drains were placed in his abdomen to address the NEC, then he developed pneumonia and sepsis, and needed a blood transfusion.

T.J. stayed 102 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). His mother stayed by his side the entire time, resting in the sleep room when she could. The doctors had to wait to perform an exploratory bowel surgery until he had grown enough for his little body to handle the pressure. Once he was ready, they fixed his perforated bowel and removed his appendix, but thankfully did not have to remove any other parts of his gastrointestinal system.

More than three months after his birth, T.J. was finally able to go home for the first time. Accompanied by a feeding tube and an apnea monitor, he faced a slow but steady road to recovery, and needed the help of the Children’s speech and physical therapy programs.

T.J. is now 2 years old and is walking and talking—a happy and healthy young toddler. He and his family make regular visits to Children’s to keep up with his development, and they could not be happier with the care he has received.

October’s Reason Why The Anthony Thornton Team Donates to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta & Local Charities

A STORY OF ROBIN- Meet Robin

Robin loves to sing and is an alto in her school’s chorus. A talented student, she regularly receives A’s and B’s. Polite and kind, she answers adults with a “yes, ma’am” or a “no, sir,” like she learned from her parents. Robin seems like an average teenager—excited about summer, when she’ll be able to swim, one of her favorite activities.

But Robin is not your typical teenager. She is a survivor.

When she was 6, Robin was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare and difficult-to-treat bone cancer. Her parents, Laurie and Rob, were shocked and devastated. Robin received chemotherapy and radiation at the Aflac Cancer Center and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, which treats more than 400 newly diagnosed cancer patients each year.

The treatment was a success, and Robin was in remission for more than a year when the she was dealt another blow. Robin was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), a type of cancer that affects white blood cells, and sometimes develops after chemotherapy. She later underwent a successful blood and marrow transplant (BMT), which restored Robin’s damaged blood stem cells.

Today, Robin is cancer-free and regularly participates in the Aflac Cancer Center Cancer Survivor Program. In the fall, Robin will start a new chapter in her life—high school. And this survivor couldn’t be more excited about the chance to make new memories for years to come.

September’s Reason Why The Anthony Thornton Team Donates to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta & Local Charities

A STORY OF RAELYN – Meet Raelyn

Treatment continues and life goes on for brave and feisty Raelyn
Mondays were supposed to be their day. Three-year-old Raelyn and her mom Sarah would play outside, run errands or just enjoy their time home alone together. But on March 6, 2017, Raelyn woke up with a stomachache that would not subside no matter what Sarah tried to relieve her daughter’s pain. “Something in my gut told me that we needed to take her somewhere because she does not act like this. She never complains about being sick,” says Sarah.

Emergency room doctors confirmed that Raelyn’s tummy ache was not something Sarah could fix. “They told me: ‘Her lab work doesn’t look right. Her platelets are very low, her spleen is enlarged—it’s the size of a football.’ So they admitted her to run some tests. They said it could be cancer or an infection,” Sarah says.

Test results later revealed that Raelyn had acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). She started intense chemotherapy treatment at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, which was repeated every seven days for eight months. “Every day I would wake up expecting her to be ill, but she is just so strong,” says Sarah. “Every day, she amazes me.”
A part of the maintenance phase of her treatment, Raelyn received chemotherapy through her port once a month and spinal chemo every three months. She also took as many as 10 pills daily to keep her on the road to a full recovery.

Today, Raelyn is a happy, energetic child who loves to swim with her brother. “She wants to be a mermaid when she grows up,” says Sarah. And Sarah and her husband Matt are committed to allowing Raelyn to explore every possibility and every new challenge.
