Meet Parker: Exceeding All Hopes and here’s London’s Story: An Infant’s Frightening Fight with Meningitis

“When she was just five months old, London suffered from a double ear infection. Knowing she’d had a rough night, London’s mom Alexis got up to check on her at 4 a.m. She found the baby in her crib with her eyes fixed upward and breathing very slowly. The family rushed to their local emergency room. Doctors stabilized London and started her on a ventilator, but quickly realized the problem was more severe than the hospital was equipped to handle. London was soon life-flighted to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Following a spinal tap, Children’s doctors diagnosed London with bacterial meningitis, an infection in the spinal fluid, which can cause brain damage and hearing loss and can be fatal. London was immediately put on several antibiotics and her parents wondered if their baby girl would survive. After a stressful couple of days, London began responding to the antibiotics and was soon able to come off the ventilator. It would be many more days before doctors could determine if there would be lasting effects from the meningitis. This was made more difficult by the fact that London was so young and hadn’t fully developed her motor skills.

However, London’s parents and medical team were all delighted to see her smiling and beginning to bounce back so soon after such a scary situation. She responded well to nurses and kept smiling, reassuring her parents that their little girl would be okay. London did lose hearing in one ear, requiring her to undergo speech and hearing therapy at least until she begins kindergarten. Now, at three years old, London is thriving. This Miracle Child’s parents say London is bright, engaged at preschool, playful and overall a happy toddler.”

Fixing a Broken Heart and here’s Jonathan’s Story.

“We’re originally from Florida, and that’s where Jonathan was born. About two days after he was born, his dad and I noticed his breathing was very abnormal. When asleep, he was breathing very shallowly so they took him to the NICU to observe and run tests for a few days. They didn’t find anything, so they sent us home and we took him to his regular doctor for a follow-up; not even his pediatrician could diagnose him.

In January, we decided to move up here to Atlanta. That’s where Jonathan’s dad is from, and Jonathan is named after him. Jonathan kept getting worse. He couldn’t keep anything down, and he wasn’t gaining weight. We brought him to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Hughes Spalding, and he was soon transferred to Egleston where he’s been since Jan. 26. He stayed in the PICU until mid-April.

They decided to try some genetic testing and, yup, he was diagnosed with a rare disease called congenital central hypoventilation syndrome. Basically, when he’s asleep he doesn’t get a signal from his brain telling him to breathe.
CHOA is truly amazing, and the nurses are wonderful. I know they love Jonathan”

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta: Child Abuse Prevention and here’s Another Story of Jade.

An Inside Look: Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and here’s Another Story of Andrew;
A Cancer Diagnosis Was Never Expected

Andrew has always loved sports. He has played since he was 2 years old and wants to be a professional soccer player when he grows up.
So, when his mother noticed him struggling on the basketball court, she knew something was wrong.
At first, she thought it was symptoms of asthma. Andrew’s pediatrician recommended he use his inhaler 15 minutes before practice, but that didn’t seem to help.

During a second visit to the pediatrician, Andrew began crying when the doctor asked him to do jumping jacks. He complained that it was hard for him to breathe, his heartrate was high and his skin had a yellow tone to it.

his phase of treatment will last about two years and includes daily oral chemo pills and monthly infusion chemotherapy in the clinic with check-ups to monitor the disease.

“Children’s has been amazing,” Stephanie adds. “From helping us cope with this diagnosis to answering my millions of questions, they have been there for us and made us feel like we weren’t going through this alone.”
